Plaza San Martin, is a residential haven located delicately between Recoleta and El Centro (downtown). This exclusive and compact neighborhood boasts wonderful parks, monuments, fantastic examples of Buenos Aires Art Deco architecture, luxury hotels and elegant residences.
Plaza San Martin is within walking distance to El Centro (downtown) and Recoleta, and visitors can reach Palermo on bus route 152 in an estimated 10 minutes. Subte (subway) line C station San Martin is only one stop, less than 3 minutes, away from El Centro. Please note these times are estimates and depend on the time of day. A quick tip, plan breakfast and your afternoon coffee break at peak transport times as it stinks to be out their amid rush hour traffic!
Plaza San Martin, has been a jack-of-all-trades - a slave market, military stockade and a bullring. French-born Argentine landscape designer and architect, Carlos Thays, designed this park as well as the Botanical Gardens of Palermo. The plaza itself nuzzles up to the Circulo Militar and its extravagant iron gates. Behind the gates, visitors can see a glimpse of what was once the family house of the owner of The Prensa, one of Argentina’s oldest newspapers. In 1939, the property became the Army Club and now features El Museo de Armas, a fascinating history of armaments museum.
Plaza San Martin is also known as Retiro because the train station of the same name is located adjacent to the plaza. This train station provides excellent service to those looking to travel with in the greater provinces of Buenos Aires. This is also the main omnibus hub in the northern half of Buenos Aires city.
You are just a stone’s throw from Calle Florida, which offers some of the best shopping in Buenos Aires. Plaza San Martin is conveniently located adjacent to Puerto Madero with its many international restaurants, waterside living and nature walks. We separate this district from wider downtown (El Centro) because although in the heart of Buenos Aires, this barrio has some of the quietest and grandest residential streets in and is not just a commercial center. Today there is a great variety of shopping, bars, cafes and nightlife - you could not find a better place to stay and explore the rest of Buenos Aires.
